Hades thought Persephone was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. I think the Greek myth does a better job of describing the seasons and their changes. The most detailed is recounted in the Homeric 'Hymn to Demeter.' Persephone (or Kore) was the only daughter of Hades' sister Demeter, the goddess of corn (wheat) and agriculture. I also liked that she did not have to be in the underworld for six moths but rather three. The major myth associated with Hades is how he obtained his wife, Persephone. I feel as though the Homeric Hymn of Demeter had language of more beauty and the descriptions of the nature in that myth to be more pleasing. Though I really did enjoy Ovid’s version of the myth I found the version told by Homer to be my favorite. Also in Ovid’s version of the myth Proserpine was forced to stay in the underworld for half of the year, the time of fall and winter. Persephone, also known as Kore, was the daughter of the Olympian goddess Demeter, and she was thus associated with vegetation and grain. In the version told by Ovid Persephone’s name is Proserpina. by Chrissy The myth of Hades and Persephone is one of the most well-known stories of love and abduction in Greek mythology. She would stay with Hades for that period and for the rest of the year she would live with the Gods and Goddesses on Mount Olympus. Hades had tricked Persephone into eating pomegranate seeds and because she had tasted food in the underworld she had to stay there so for three months out of the year, the time of winter.

Persephone’s mother Demeter went to Zeus to get her daughter back from Hades and Zeus sent Hermes to retrieve her from the underworld. The Greek myth says that Hades loved Persephone and he abducted her from a field where she was picking flowers and took her to the underworld with him to be his wife. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter the Rape of Persephone is told in detail while in Hesiod’s Theogony it is really only briefly mentioned. There is one story in particular that I found most interesting that was told both by Ovid and by Hesiod and Homer. There are many Greek and Roman myths that mirror each other and are clearly retelling them same stories only with the Gods/Goddesses from their respective areas.
